Local choice, national voice

Local choice, national voice

About Me

I have lived in Chapelhall, at the heart of Airdrie and Shotts constituency, and neighbouring Motherwell and Wishaw, for my entire life. I understand the needs and hopes of the people here because I am one of them.

My history is here. My friends and family are here. My life is here. My future is here.

I started my working life 25 years ago on a stall at Airdrie Market. I worked all through school and university, including at the Calderbank Café, on the production lines alongside my Mum in Boots Factory and doing bar work in Chapelhall, Airdrie and Coatbridge.

I got involved in the local Labour Party when I was looking for a way to help my town.

It was the greatest honour of my life to be selected and then elected as the MP for my home area.

I worked and campaigned for social justice in Parliament, including speaking out against the Coalition Government’s worst cuts to welfare through Universal Credit, investigating and exposing the blacklisting of trade unionists through my work on the Scottish Affairs Committee, and supporting Equal Marriage legislation.

These issues are at the heart of why I got involved in politics. I stood to fight against injustices and for a fairer world, but the biggest battle of my time in politics so far has ended up being the constitution, ever since the SNP won in 2011. I want to change that.

Currently, as Chief Executive of Scotland in Union, I work every day to turn the tide against the SNP so we can stop having to see everything through the prism of independence.

It is time for politics to focus again on what really matters.

My experience as a parliamentarian then running a large national campaign, taking the fight to the SNP, and my passion for fighting for the people here in my home area, make me the best-placed candidate for Labour in this selection.

Uniting Voters Behind Labour

In the general election we need a candidate who can speak to those people who at their heart share our Labour values, and need a strong local voice to convince them to come back to us, or indeed to trust us with their vote for the first time.

My record as a strong local MP, with proven Labour values, will give them confidence in us. I am the candidate to communicate Labour’s new energy, new policies, and new future to voters.

We need a candidate who can win over the voters that we have lost to the SNP.  My work in exposing the failures of the SNP in government and their ineffectiveness in the House of Commons has already contributed to reducing the SNP vote here and across Scotland.

Now is the time to highlight these problems to the wider electorate and make the positive case for Labour to these voters, and I am the candidate to do this.

We need a candidate who can win over those who vote Conservative as they currently believe that this is the best way to protect the Union.  I am approached regularly by local people who have told me they will vote for me as they know I will stand up for our position in the UK and that I am best placed to beat the SNP here.

I am the candidate to win over voters who prioritise Scotland’s future in the UK.

My Pledges

I will continue to live locally as our candidate and as our MP. I will always be here to listen and will be visible in our community.

I will prioritise fundraising to ensure we have a full, well-funded election campaign to give us the best chance of winning.

I will run an inclusive campaign, ensuring that all members feel welcomed and are supported by volunteers from throughout the country to help in our battle here.

When elected, I will have a visible and easily accessible constituency office.

As your MP I will hold regular surgeries, and use a variety of methods to ensure I am reachable (e.g. street surgeries, zoom surgeries, home appointments).
